COP29: We Have the Momentum
November 2024

By Edward Mazria
The drive towards a zero-carbon and resilient built environment has gained irreversible momentum since the 2015 COP21 Paris Agreement, driven by the recognition of the climate crisis as a threat to economic stability and human well-being. This global momentum is deeply rooted in the planning and design professions and the private sector, with strong support from sub-national governments, making it resilient to shifts in national policies. The built environment sector has shown remarkable progress, and continues expanding emissions reductions in embodied carbon, resilient infrastructure and landscapes, sufficiency measures, and building reuse. This progress is propelled by the growing understanding that climate action is both an economic and moral necessity. The urgency of our global climate situation demands accelerated action—the tools and strategies are available worldwide, and the time to implement them is now.
