Purchasing Renewable Energy

Utilities

Once energy-efficient design and onsite technologies have been applied, purchasing electricity from renewable sources is a great way to offset the energy demand of your home . Many utility companies are offering energy from renewable sources presently, while others will be soon.

To see what renewable energy programs your utility provides, go to the Database of State Incentives for Renewables & Efficiency.

Renewable Energy Credits

If the local utilities don’t offer renewable energy, then purchase renewable energy credits (RECs) or green tags. RECs are legal certificates that can be bought and traded as though they were energy purchased from renewable sources. The money used to purchase these credits goes into renewable energy technologies throughout the country.

For a list of Renewable Energy Certificate Marketers, go to the DOE’s Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy website.
