PETITION: Adopt The 2030 Challenge

Any short-term benefits of fossil fuel, greenhouse-gas-emitting energy is not worth the risk of devastating climate change. We, as future leaders, are not willing to take this risk.

Therefore, we urge our campus president
(please fill in the name of your college/university president)
to adopt and implement The 2030 Challenge for all new and renovated campus buildings, reducing fossil fuel, greenhouse-gas-emitting energy consumption by 50% by the year 2010, incrementally increasing the reduction to carbon neutral by the year 2030. Specifically, the Challenge calls for:
  1. all new and renovated buildings to be designed to use half the fossil fuel energy they would typically consume, i.e. half the regional average for that building type, and
  2. the fossil fuel reduction standard for all new and renovated buildings to be increased to
    60% in 2010
    70% in 2015
    80% in 2020
    90% in 2025
Carbon neutral by 2030 (using no fossil fuel, greenhouse-gas-emitting energy).
By achieving The 2030 Challenge, our campus will provide needed leadership for our nation and the world.
