Scientist tell us that in order to avoid dangerous climate change we must keep global warming under 2°C above pre-industrial levels (we are currently at 0.7°C above pre-industrial levels). We will meet our responsibility in keeping global warming under this threshold by adopting the following CLIMATE ACTION PLAN:
- That all new buildings, developments and major renovation projects be designed to use 1/2 the fossil fuel energy to construct and operate then they would typically consume.
- This fossil fuel reduction standard for the operation of all new
buildings must be increased to:
- 60% in 2010
- 70% in 2015
- 80% in 2020
- 90% in 2025
- carbon-neutral by 2030 (meaning they will use no fossil fuel energy to operate).
- In our professional schools, require the establishment of a mandatory, full-year, innovative, studio-based program which promotes creative problem-solving relevant to climate change— one which incorporates a deep understanding of the relationship between nature and design in all core courses.
- Incorporate information regarding the embodied energy in building
materials into a federally sponsored, nationwide, American Institute
of Architects (AIA) continuing-education program with the specific
goal of reducing the embodied energy of building designs by 50%
in the next five years. Add embodied energy information into
architectural specification sytems.
